About

I didn't get into technology
because I loved databases.

I got into technology because I enjoyed understanding how complicated systems worked.

For a long time I thought the systems I was interested in were technical. Cloud platforms. Data pipelines. Architecture. Distributed systems.

The more organisations I've worked in, the more I've realised those are only part of the picture.

The interesting systems are the organisations themselves. How decisions get made. How trust is built. Why good engineering sometimes becomes invisible. Why teams with talented people still struggle to deliver.

I've spent the last decade building and transforming data platforms across healthcare, education, fintech and energy.

I've reduced infrastructure costs by 75%, rebuilt struggling platforms, consolidated hundreds of databases into modern analytics platforms and led engineering teams through periods of rapid organisational change.

Those achievements matter. What interests me more is why they worked.

Technology rarely fixes organisations by itself. Good technology leadership is about understanding the organisation well enough to know what needs changing and what should be left alone.

Every business has its own rhythm. Sometimes leadership means introducing structure. Sometimes it means removing it. Sometimes it means slowing things down. Sometimes it means helping the organisation move faster with greater confidence.

That's what I enjoy.

This website isn't a portfolio.

It's a collection of ideas, lessons and observations from trying to build organisations that make better technology decisions.

If anything here resonates with your own experience, I'd love to hear from you.

Beyond the work

Solo acoustic musician — you'll occasionally find me playing in pubs around South Yorkshire. Keen hiker, usually somewhere in the Peaks or the Dales. Father to two girls, which keeps everything else in perspective.

I started in technology entirely self-taught — Python, SQL, machine learning fundamentals, data warehousing. I haven't stopped learning since. 450+ hours of CPD across ML, mathematics, the Microsoft analytics stack and Lean Six Sigma. Understanding fundamentals properly is what separates good engineers from great ones.
