I'm open to my next data leadership role, permanent or contract. Either way the job is the same: one person who owns a company's data, meaning the platform, the team, or both. I'm hands-on, so I can build it as well as run it.
This is the job I do now. At PEP Health I report to the CTO and own the data strategy, the platform, the team and the data acquisition budget, and I advise on what the company can sell from its data. I've line-managed up to six engineers and led a team through a restructure.
I'm looking for a Head of Data or data leadership role where data is central to what the company sells, and where the job is to build the function as well as run it.
This is for companies between data leaders, or ones that have never had one. I take over the team and the roadmap, sort out which work is urgent and which is just loud, and get the platform into a state the business can plan around. When you're ready, I'll help you hire the permanent person and hand over properly.
This is for the platform that costs too much, breaks too often, or was built by someone who has since left. I've done this four times, at PEP Health, The National College, Engie and Civica, and every one came out cheaper to run.
I start by finding out what the business actually uses the data for, and only then change anything. I build with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, tests and documentation from the first week, so your own team can run the platform after I've gone.
I look at what you've got, what it costs, who depends on it and where it's going to hurt next. Then I write it up in plain English with what I'd do first. It's useful before a rebuild, a senior hire, a funding round or a renewal with a big vendor.
I'm based in Rotherham. I work remotely across the UK and I'm happy to be on site in Sheffield, Leeds or Manchester when that helps. I can work outside IR35 or inside it, depending on the engagement.
